Russ warriors

      Lots of little tidbits I have been painting up with a few pics....these miniatures are for another individual who will base them up.

Dark Age Russ

    

     These miniatures are not for me but I always find both Vikings and the Russ people seem to love to have for their collections and always a top request to have painted up.

Russ

     Hand full of Russ recently painted for someone and an army I will some day add to my dark age collection of figures. I have been asked many times to paint both Vikings and Russ figures and they seem to almost rival each other in popularity. 

 

Russ

      I am not certain of the make of these figures as I have never seen these before. Again part of some recently painted figures per some commission work and wanted to share. If anyone knows who the manufacture is please let me know. They are nice figures over all only complain involved the chain mail barding on the horses as it was not the most defined chain mail I have seen. 

  

 

Russ/Eastern vikings

     The following are a small group of figures I painted on behalf of someone else. He will provide the basing and obviously they are intentionally mounted on individual bases for how he will use them. He asked that they resemble more of a Russ appearance or at least Vikings that have an eastern influenced appearance about them. The biggest difference is in the shields as  Viking opted for mostly plain colors often separated into quarters and halves with different colors. For the Russ different painted patterns depicted on the shield were common. Colors for clothing often be off whites, creams and other shades of linen wools. Naturally, other earth tones as well as red and deep blue would not be out of place. The manufacturers are a variety of miniatures Gripping Beast, Artizan and Footsore. 

Russ/Russians

       These are suppose to be for a Russ army....they appear to be perhaps a little later
closer to medieval period Russ. Nice figures to paint up and not certain who the maker is
I believe they belong to a Russian manufacturer perhaps Commissar Miniatures? Anyway
posted pics of different angles of these for those interested. Shield design I simply hand
painted...believable I hope for the time frame.

Crusader varangians painted as mercenary Russ. Miniatures are not based as they were painted for someone else for their personal collection. I cannot say enough for this line by crusader as these miniatures are so well done and paint up so nicely. The transfers for the shields are by LBMS and the the double armed figure is by gripping beast. He stands a good 3mm higher than the rest which is fitting after all being a leader in dark age time i imagine raw size should be a prerequisite. Color selections went outside the norm for varangians as the owner wanted them to represent mercenary russ. I chose off white which was popular among people of slavic descent during the byzantine period as well as other popular clothing colors that byzantine had access to: scarlet, red,blue, gray and green. Shoes varied with leather or dark grey colors.
